Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN)
You can receive a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) for parking violations from the police, local council, or Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). FPNs can be paid online, and the ticket will provide other payment methods. If you do not pay an FPN within 28 days, the fine increases by 50%, and failure to pay can lead to prosecution, resulting in a larger fine and court costs. Penalty points on your licence are only given for certain parking FPNs, such as leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position. FPNs can also be issued for speeding and minor motoring offences
Penalty Charge Notice (PCN)
Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) are issued by a Local Authority, Transport for London (TFL), or Dartford Crossing. For more information on PCNs, please refer to the Government advice. How you pay a parking ticket or penalty charge notice depends on the type of ticket and the issuing authority. Typically, you have 28 days to pay, with the fine often reduced if paid within 14 days. If you lose your ticket, contact the issuer to find out how to pay. Note that the process for paying and challenging parking tickets differs in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Is 247Advice credible?
Misinformation online can be costly. The rules around parking tickets in the UK has changed a lot over the years and much of the information online is out of date, or not written by industry experts. Advice like “ignore” will lead to the cost of your parking ticket increasing, and even land you in court.
